Gina Wilson’s Bio
(BOARD MEMBER)
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gina has primarily lived in Florida her entire life. She is the mother of six; her fifth child was diagnosed with autism just before the age of two. This diagnosis rocked her family to the core and can be identified as a major contributor to divorce after almost 10 years of marriage. Though reconciled as parents, Gina wishes to help any family who is dealt this overwhelming blow.
Professionally, Gina is a professor of English and enjoys a thrilling career in education. She enjoys reading for pleasure, traveling, and playing her cello. She is currently finishing her dissertation, which she hopes to submit for national publication as a monograph towards new scholarship in women and gender studies.
Gina volunteers both locally and nationally as an English educator. On social media, she is Everybody's English Professor. She has also been heavily involved in the advocacy of K-12 students with disabilities, and more recently those who are emerging adults. She often quips, "Learning to embrace challenges has been both the bane and benefit of my life. As my son grew older and the challenges became greater, I stopped asking "why" and started focusing on "how." This has shifted my perspective tremendously, and resulted in a burning desire to serve, and to share perspectives I wish I had as a newly installed parent of a child with autism many years ago. No person or family should feel isolated in this process. Through collaboration and community, we can provide with abundance the support families need to thrive with this diagnosis."
