Jim Gaffney’s Bio
Born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1970, Jim has been married to wife Janine for 30 years. He and his family live in St. Augustine, Florida. Jim is the father of three adult sons, one of whom is autistic (Asperger Syndrome). Jim was also diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome in his 40s and is an advocate for those with autism.
Although born in Ohio, New Jersey was home to Jim for most of his life prior to moving to Florida in 2016. His resume includes 20+ years in computer programming with Bank of America/Merrill Lynch and he is currently the Office Director of Awetism Wonderland in St. Augustine. Running has always been a passion and Jim is an accomplished distance runner having completed 5 marathons and 4 half-marathons. Running first inspired Jim to become a self-published author and he followed up with a second book regarding the impact of Asperger on individuals and families (view book list).
Working with children and families at Awetism Wonderland has inspired Jim to take his advocacy to the next level by establishing United 4 Autism as a nonprofit that is designed to help those with autism without regard to their position on the spectrum. Jim has noted that “In my decision to leave computer programming after more than 2 decades and explore new career opportunities, I never dreamt that I would find my true vocation at the age of 54. As someone with autism, music has always been a source of comfort and inspiration. In my quest to assist and advocate for a larger group of the neurodiverse community, I want to bring my passion for music along with me. The power and influence of music is something that amazes me. Whether autistic or not, our lives are one big collection of music. Sometimes it’s sad and other times it’s happy and joyful. Life, work and family are all about balance and so too is music”.
“I’m hungry for what comes next. I welcome the future and the challenge that stands before me in forming United 4 Autism and in helping it become the global organization that I have envisioned”.
